- What is Toastmasters International?
Toastmasters International is a club that is dedicated to equipping individuals with good communication and thinking skills, in honing them to become leaders. Smedley on October 22, 1924, at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, United States. Toastmasters International was incorporated under California law on December 19, 1932. Throughout its history, Toastmasters has served over four million people, and today the organization serves over 345,000 members in 142 countries, through its over 17,000 member clubs.
- Are speakers born, or are they made?
Speakers are not born. To be a good speaker doesn’t mean that one has acquired the necessary skills upon birth. To be a good speaker means constant practice and constant striving for improvement, especially through a helping group like Toastmasters International.
- Can stage fright be conquered?
Definitely, it can. Most people have stage fright, it’s just that not many have the courage to do something concrete about it. To conquer stage fright, nothing beats excellent preparation.
- How does one become a more effective communicator?
There is no magic wand for effective communication. You will always need constant practice, and make sure that it’s the good kind of practice. Learn to embrace more complex forms of communication. Do not just settle for no-brainer conversations that do not challenge you. Instead, push yourself to your known limits. Talk to accomplished people and learn your lessons from them. Read a lot of books, do elaborate research on how to more effectively communicate.
- What can good communication contribute to the community?
Communities are founded on good communication. The smooth flow of leadership structures within the community heavily depend on whether or not communication is free and unobstructed within the community. With good communication, leaders are more able to mobilize their followers, and followers are more challenged to take the lead when their time comes.
